Tips to Make Your Research Easy & Productive

      • Write down everything you know from present to past.
      • Write out the month when recording a date to avoid confusion later, and always use four digits when recording a year.
      • Evaluate the sources of the information by comparing and verifying the information with two other sources.
      • Avoid being a “name only” collector. Make a point of citing the sources so you remember where you have been.
      • Take time to think about what you want to find before searching. Write down questions that you are trying to answer. Search in manageable steps.
      • Use forms to keep information organized. Forms can be downloaded from Ancestry.com. Forms that are useful include the Individual Worksheet, Six Generation Chart, Research Checklist and Family Unit Chart.
      • Use Cyndi’s List, a categorized and cross-referenced list of links that point you to genealogical research sites online.
